Small dogs were originally bred to be companions of royalty. Its sole purpose was to bring their own camaraderie, loyalty and fun. The types of small dogs, what is now known as the Toy Group includes, were genetically bred not only small but also to seek the company of humans. The same qualities that made the dog is a favorite of the Royal Family also make a favorite of Americans today. Despite their rapid growth in popularity, many toy breeds are unknown to most Americans. Below is a list of six types of small dogs in the Toy Group and some information on their history and temperament.
